You go on a guided ? bike tour of scenic Goa, famous for its excellent beaches,
churches, and temples. A Portuguese territory for centuries, Goa’s unique
combination of Indian and Western culture is seen in its two World Heritage Sites -
the Bom Jesus Basilica, (resting place of St. Francis Xavier), and the old Portuguese
quarter, Fontainhas.
Transfer by coach for some pleasant afternoon cycling around Om beach, which gets
its name from the Holy Hindu sign and sound of the chant. Green hills surround three
beaches and the view from the highest point is breathtaking.
From Om beach, transfer by coach to Hampi, the grand and prosperous capital of the
Hindu Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You take a guided ? bike tour of its fascinating forts, royal and sacred complexes,
temples, and civic structures.
From Hampi you travel by coach up the Western Ghats to Chikmagaloore - the
“birthplace of coffee in India”. It is popular for its plantations, hill stations, cascades,
mountain streams and lush vegetation. Views include Mullayanagiri, the highest peak
in Karnataka, and a mountainside fondly called the ‘horse's face’.
From Chikmagaloore you take a day trip to Sringeri, which has several historic
temples and was India’s first Hindu monastic seat of learning. The Sri Vidyashankara
temple uses the complex astronomical knowledge of its medieval builders. It is
aligned so inner sanctums are touched by the equinox and solstice sunrises, and
twelve pillars carved with signs of the zodiac, each receive the sun in the order of the
solar months.
A pleasant cycle takes you from Chikmagaloor to Belur, the capital of the Hindu
Hoysala Empire from 11 th to 14 th century. Belur and Halebidu, about 16 km further
on, contain a number of both Jain and Hindu spiritual and architectural gems
including a pair of ornate temples lined with exquisite stone carvings. The towns are a
major tourist destination in Karnataka.
The state highway road and scenic countryside from Hassan to Sravanabelagola
makes this stretch pleasurable cruising. From a distance you can see an impressive
18m/58 ft stone man (Gommateshwara/Bahubali), considered the world's largest
monolithic statue. It is part of a long Jain heritage. Both the sculpture its Jain temple
complex are important pilgrimage destinations.
You hit the pedals next day with a guided tour of Mysore’s many heritage sites
including the famous Royal (Ambar Vilas) Palace with its durbar hall and the golden
royal elephant throne. There is also the Chamundeshwari and Ranganathaswamy
Temples, St. Philomena's Church, Wesley's Cathedral, Mysore Zoo, Blue Lagoon
Lake and Brindavan Gardens. The day continues with a ride to the historical fort at
Srirangapatnam Island. Local markets reflect Mysore’s importance as a
producer premium silk, sandalwood and incense.
On to Masinagudi, where you can see thick jungle that is part of the famous
Mudumalai forest reserve and wildlife sanctuary. The Moyar River straddling the
town is a good place to see animals coming down for water. It plunges into the gorge
nearby at the spectacular Moyar Falls.
The road from Masinagudi to Ooty in Tamil Nadu ascends from 970m/xft to
2000m/xft above sea level, through the famous Kalhatti ghat section. You start with a
15 km/xm cycle in the foothills, and then make an ascent, which becomes steeper for
the last 18 kms (with 36 hairpin bends). The view at the top is well worth it.
You will spend an enjoyable day exploring Ooty by bike. This colonial hill station
harks back to another time and place. It is known for its English-style cottages, Elk
Hill Rose Garden, expansive lake with pleasure craft, 19th century Botanical Garden
and local cottage industries.
The ride from Ooty to Mettupalayam in the Nilgiri hills (314m /1033 ft) is an
enjoyable downhill run?. Here the Nilgiri Mountain Railway operates steam
locomotives on the steepest track in Asia. Completed in 1908, it is recognized by
UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You stop briefly at Wellington? on the way.
From Mettupalayam, you ride to Munnar. Here you spend a day exploring by bike
enjoying its fragrant cardamom, tea and spice plantations, misty mountains, hill
stations, and abundant bird and wildlife.
From Munnar it is a fabulous downhill run? to Thattekkadu and the famous Salim Ali
Bird Sanctuary. The forest of tropical deciduous and evergreen trees provides a rich
habitat for over 500 species of water and land birds (280 considered rare). If your luck
holds you may see local wildlife such as sloths, porcupines, leopards, and elephants.
You finish with an easy flat ride to Kochin, India’s oldest European settlement, and a
fascinating guided? tour that explores its history, art, buildings and monuments.
